New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday (September 17) directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report on the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata during the tenure of Sandip Ghosh as the principal of the institute where a trainee woman doctor was raped and murdered on August 9.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra directed the CBI to submit the status report while hearing a suo motu cognisance on the rape and murder of the trainee woman doctor on August 9 in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
CBI is investigating financial irregularities on High Court order
The CBI is investigating the case of financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the orders of the Calcutta High Court and the central agency has arrested Ghosh and others in the financial irregularity case. The High Court transferred the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from the West Bengal government-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI on a petition by a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had filed a plea before the High Court seeking a probe into the alleged financial misconduct at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of Ghosh by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the alleged rape and murder of the trainee woman doctor inside the seminar room of the institute on August 9 sparked nationwide protests.

The CBI arrested Ghosh and two alleged associates of Ghosh in the alleged financial irregularities case on September 2 amid protests over the rape and death of the trainee woman doctor at the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
