Kolkata: Former colleagues at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have come forward to describe Dr Sandip Ghosh, the recently ousted principal, as “very corrupt”. The revelation comes amidst the ongoing investigation into the shocking rape and murder of a trainee post-graduate doctor within the hospital’s premises, which has put Dr Ghosh at the centre of the controversy.
Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, has accused Ghosh of widespread corruption. Ali said that Ghosh was involved in various unethical practices, including deliberately failing students and demanding bribes for even the most routine tasks at the institution.
“He is a very corrupt person. He used to fail students. He used to get 20% commission on tender orders. He used to loot money for every work that was taken up at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He used to provide alcohol to students at his guest house. He was like a mafia person,” news agency ANI quoted Akhtar Ali as saying.
“Ghosh used to have a big security. He is very powerful. I had filed a complain against him in 2023. His resignation was just an eyewash. He was appointed as a principal at National Medical College within eight hours after his resignation,” Ali added.

NMC acts to enhance campus safety
In the wake of the shocking incident, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions, as directed by Union Health Minister JP Nadda. The advisory has highlighted the need for institutions to develop and implement robust policies that guarantee a secure working environment for staff and students. The move comes after a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the college’s seminar hall on August 9, with the victim’s family alleging rape and murder and demanding a comprehensive investigation into the case.
