RG Kar case: FORDA ends nationwide strike, but other medical groups refuse to back down

New Delhi: The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has officially called off its strike, but many other medical organisations have opted to continue their protest. The groups are dissatisfied with FORDA’s decision and accused the association of calling off the strike prematurely without achieving any substantial outcomes. They say that it was inappropriate for FORDA to announce the end of the strike after meeting with the Union Health Minister, given that doctors in Kolkata are still actively protesting and demanding justice on the streets.

It is to be noted that it was FORDA that initially called for the nationwide strike in response to the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. After discussions with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, FORDA decided to end the strike after being assured that their demands for a safer working environment would be met.

Resident doctors’ strike

Resident doctors in India went on strike to protest the murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata, disrupting non-emergency services. The Indian Medical Association met with the health minister to demand safe zones and a central law against healthcare violence. The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI and urged striking doctors to resume work, citing their “pious obligation” to treat patients.
