Kolkata: A city court on Tuesday (September 17) extended the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody of Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, Tala police station officer in charge, for three days till September 20 in the rape and murder case of a trainee woman doctor in the seminal room of the hospital on August 9.

Ghosh and Mondal were arrested by the CBI on September 14 in connection with the rape and murder of the 31-year-old woman doctor and the court remanded them to the CBI custody. While Ghosh has been arrested for alleged destruction of evidence, Mondal has been arrested for alleged destruction of evidence, compromising scene of crime and delay in registering the First Information Report (FIR).
Since Ghosh and Mondal were not cooperating, an extension of their custody was required, CBI submitted
The counsel representing the CBI told the court that since Ghosh and Mondal were not cooperating in the investigation, an extension of their CBI custody was required.
The CBI further told the court that the investigators have not yet found any evidence proving any direct involvement of the duo in the rape or murder of the woman doctor on August 9 but their call details have revealed that they had made several calls to certain numbers on that day and the agency wants to know about that.
The court then extended the remand of the duo for another three days till September 20, news agency PTI reported.

High Court transferred case from Kolkata Police to CBI
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 transferred the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on a bunch of pleas seeking a court-monitored investigation into the case and an investigation into the conduct of the hospital authorities, including the role of Ghosh, then RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal, and other officials by a special team of investigating officers.
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the case.
Ghosh has also been arrested by CBI in alleged financial irregularities case
Ghosh and his two alleged associates were also arrested by the CBI on September 2 for his alleged involvement in the financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital during his tenure as the principal of the institute. The High Court transferred the case of alleged financial irregularities at the institute from the state government-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI on a petition by a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
