New Delhi: It’s exactly one month since the 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. And in all these days of probe into the ghastly incident, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy remains the only accused person on paper. The CBI, which took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police, has grilled around 100 witnesses and carried out 12 polygraph tests till now.
The incident occurred on August 9 and the Kolkata Police arrested the prime suspect on August 10. Roy has claimed that when he saw the woman, she was already injured and lying unconscious, and that he is being framed. However, the central probe agency considers the 33-year-old to be the prime accused. He was spotted in the CCTV camera entering the seminar hall in the emergency building, where the body of the deceased doctor was found. His Bluetooth earphone was also recovered near the body of the victim.
The probe by the Kolkata Police concluded that the doctor was assaulted and there were multiple injury marks on her body. It was found that the junior doctor was allegedly strangled and the woman’s thyroid cartilage got ruptured due to this.
He exited the hospital building after 40 minutes
After entering the hospital building at 4 am on August 9, Roy could be seen exiting it after 40 minutes. Apart from his Bluetooth earphone that was recovered near the body of the victim, traces of blood and skin found under the deceased fingernails matched DNA of Roy.
The CBI was handed over 53 items seized by the Kolkata Police, including the accused clothes and undergarments. Initially, the probe agency carried out investigations by psychology experts on Roy. The experts dubbed Roy as a “sexual pervert” with “animal-like instincts”. The CBI also approached the AIIMS Delhi with Roy’s DNA and forensic reports and asked for their opinion on it.
His polygraph test
Roy underwent a polygraph test, in which he was asked what did he do after committing the rape and murder. At this point, Roy claimed that he did not murder her. He said he had found her lying unconscious when he entered the hall. The accused claimed that he did not know the doctor, even although a CCTV grab from the night of August 8 showed that he was staring at the woman.
Around 100 witnesses have been questioned by the CBI since it launched the investigation. These 100 witnesses include the security staff of the hospital, doctors, healthcare personnel and the friends of the victim. Polygraph tests were conducted on ex-RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and his friend Kolkata Police ASI Anup Dutta. It has also recorded the statements of the victim’s parents as well as those of the victim’s friends.
