New Delhi: The Indian Railways is the largest employer in India, with over 40 lakh jobs generated in a decade. As per reports, the Railways has generated over 50,000 jobs annually since 2014. But, every job is not regular in nature, and the candidates are hired both for the permanent and contractual positions.
The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts recruitment exams for various posts in Indian Railways. The exams conducted by RRB are regular in nature, while zone-wise, the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) hires for various contractual posts.
What are the benefits of regular jobs in Indian Railways?
Job security: The railway gob as a government job is one of the most secure in nature. The railway employees hardly lose their jobs apart from serious misconduct. On an employee’s death, the spouse, family members get the job.
Salary: The salary of railway employees is as good as other central government employees. The remuneration of the 20 percent of the employees who hold a better position are between Rs 10 to 20 lakh, while less than top 1 percent of the employees earn upto Rs 40- 50 lakh annually.
Medical expenses: The employees and family members will receive free medical expenses and treatment at railway hospitals.
Accommodation: The railway employees also get the benefits of railway quarters and cover under House Rent Allowance (HRA) to cover housing expenses if not provided quarters.
Travel: The railway employees also get the benefit of free train travel, and train travel at a reduced rate.
Contractual jobs in Indian Railways
Though regular staff are entitled to facilities of medical expenses, accommodation apart from a good salary, the contractual staffs only get a fixed salary without any perks like House Rent Allowance (HRA), Dearness Allowance (DA), other benefits. The contractual employees are hired for a period of one year or two and their contract renewed on the basis of performance.
