Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has earned global recognition, securing the top spot among central bankers worldwide, as reported by US-based Global Finance magazine. In the Global Finance Central Banker Report Card 2023, Das received an ‘A+’ rating, making him one of three central bank governors to achieve this distinction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Shaktikanta Das for this prestigious recognition.
Shaktikanta Das: The Top Global Central Banker
The grading system, ranging from ‘A’ for exceptional performance to ‘F’ for complete failure, evaluates success in areas such as inflation control, economic growth objectives, currency stability, and interest rate management, according to a statement by Global Finance magazine.
Shaktikanta Das is followed by Switzerland’s Governor Thomas J Jordan and Vietnam’s central bank chief, Nguyen Thi Hong.
The magazine noted that amidst challenges like high inflation due to suppressed demand and disrupted supply chains, central bankers have become pivotal figures in addressing these issues.
Leading Central Bankers in Global Finance Report Card
Global Finance’s annual Central Banker Report Card honors central bank governors whose strategies stand out in terms of originality, creativity, and perseverance.
Other central bank governors who earned an ‘A’ rating include Roberto Campos Neto of Brazil, Amir Yaron of Israel, Harvesh Kumar Seegolam of Mauritius, and Adrian Orr of New Zealand. Governors receiving an ‘A-‘ grade include Leonardo Villar of Colombia, Hector Valdez Albizu of the Dominican Republic, Asgeir Jonsson of Iceland, and Perry Warjiyo of Indonesia.
Notable ‘A’ and ‘A-‘ Rated Central Bank Governors
The Central Banker Report Card, a publication by Global Finance, has been evaluating central bank governors from 101 countries, regions, and districts annually since 1994. This comprehensive assessment includes institutions such as the Bank of the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of the Central African States, and the Central Bank of the West African States.
It’s worth noting that Shaktikanta Das was previously honored with the ‘Governor of the Year’ award at the Central Banking Awards 2023 held in London in June.
