New Delhi: The Congress has declared its candidates for the upcoming byelections in Rajasthan, covering seven assembly constituencies. The list, released by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) late on Wednesday, names Amit Ola, son of sitting Congress MP Brijendra Ola, as the candidate for the Jhunjhunu seat. Aryaan Khan, son of the late Zubair Khan, has been fielded for the Ramgarh seat, which fell vacant after his father’s passing.
Deendayal Bairwa has been selected to contest from Dausa, while Kastoor Chand Meena, Ratan Choudhary, Mahesh Roat, and Reshma Meena will represent Congress in Deoli-Uniara, Khinvsar, Chorasi, and Salumbar, respectively.
No alliance with regional parties
The byelections were triggered by a mix of reasons, including the deaths of sitting MLAs and the election of several assembly members to the Lok Sabha. The seats up for grabs include four previously held by Congress, while one each was held by the BJP and the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP). The BJP has already announced candidates for six of the seven seats, with the Chorasi seat still pending.
Congress has decided not to form any alliances with regional parties for these bypolls. Voting is scheduled for November 13, with results expected on November 23.
Congress leader and Rajasthan state president Govind Dotasra expressed his confidence in the party’s candidates, stating on social media that he expects a decisive victory for Congress, emphasising that the public will reject the “failed BJP government”.
48 assembly seats up for grabs in bypolls
The elections to these seats are part of a broader electoral event spanning 48 assembly constituencies across 15 states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. The Election Commission of India had announced that these byelections will coincide with the assembly polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
Voting for 47 assembly constituencies and the Wayanad parliamentary seat will be held on 13 November. The second phase, scheduled for 20 November, will see voting for the single Uttarakhand assembly seat and the Nanded parliamentary seat.
