Chennai: Rains return to Coastal Tamil Nadu starting today, with intense thunderstorms expected in some areas near Chennai as easterlies strengthen under a cyclonic circulation, says Srikanth of Chennai Rains (COMK). For the next two days, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Pondicherry, and Cuddalore will experience active rainfall. By Friday, rain will shift southward to districts like Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi, Pradeep John adds. Moderate to heavy showers are anticipated, so residents are advised to carry umbrellas and raincoats.
According to private meteorologists Srikanth and Pradeep John, a low-pressure area over the Gulf of Mannar and Sri Lanka, and another in the central South Bay of Bengal, will cause light to moderate rains with thunder and lightning.
Coastal Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rains as Cyclonic Circulation Intensifies
The weather system is fueled by a low-pressure area prevailing over the Gulf of Mannar and adjacent Sri Lanka, and another in the central South Bay of Bengal. This has led to light to moderate rains with thunder and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Pondicherry, and Cuddalore will be among the areas most affected, with active rainfall expected for the next 48 hours. Residents are advised to carry umbrellas and raincoats due to the anticipated rainfall.
By Friday, the rain is expected to shift southward, affecting districts like Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi. Private meteorologist Pradeep John warned, “Carry your umbrella and raincoat in Chennai today,” adding that some areas may experience heavy rain, while others will receive moderate showers.
