New Delhi: A railway worker was killed during shunting operation at Barauni Junction in Bihar’s Begusarai on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 9am and the shunting operation involved 15204 Lucknow-Barauni Express.
The victim, Amar Kumar Rao, a 35-year-old shunting man from Dalsinghsarai in Samastipur district, was crushed between the engine and a coach while attempting to uncouple the train. According to reports, after all passengers disembarked, the train was being repositioned, which required a change of engine. Raut was in the process of opening the coupling when the engine unexpectedly reversed, trapping him.
Railway unions and family of deceased expressed anger
Witnesses say that once the alarm was raised, the train driver exited the engine but fled the scene instead of attempting preventing further harm. His actions have sparked outrage among the bystanders, as well as among railway workers and the victim’s family, who were present at the scene.
Following the incident, the body of the deceased worker was removed and placed on the platform after a two-hour delay. Railway unions and the family of the deceased have expressed anger over what they describe as a serious lapse in safety measures. It was pointed out that typically four railway workers are required to perform such tasks, but the procedure was carried out with just the driver and one other staff member, which led to the fatal accident.
