Raigad district in Maharashtra continues to grapple with the devastating aftermath of the landslide tragedy in Irshalwadi village, Khalapur tehsil. Rescue and relief operations, led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies, persist even on the fourth day after the incident.
As of now, the death toll stands at 27, comprising 12 women, 10 men, and 4 children. Tragically, nine members of the same family lost their lives in this disaster. Additionally, there are 81 people still reported missing, and search efforts are ongoing to locate them.
Continuing Rescue and Relief Operations in Raigad After Landslide Tragedy
The rescue teams face numerous challenges, including the strong foul smell emanating from the incident site, making the relief and recovery work arduous. The absence of paved roads in the tribal village poses difficulties in bringing earth digging machines to the affected area.
Devastating Aftermath: Death Toll at 27, 81 Still Missing in Raigad Landslide
The landslide struck at night, engulfing at least 17 out of 48 houses in the village under debris. The search operation had to be briefly halted on Saturday night due to poor lighting and inclement weather but resumed at 6 am on Sunday.
Amidst the tragedy, Shiv Sena chief (UBT), Uddhav Thackeray, visited the affected residents of Irshalwadi and emphasized the need to relocate people residing in landslide-prone areas to safer places. Rehabilitation efforts are crucial to provide a safer environment for those living in such vulnerable regions.
