New Delhi: BJP leader Smriti Irani on Thursday raised questions over jailed terror accused Yasin Malik’s writing to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for help, saying that it’s “intriguing why someone who is accused of killing civilians, innocents and people in uniform is reaching out to the Gandhi family”.
“Why would a terror suspect reach out to the Gandhi family for support?” Irani asked.
Irani’s attack comes in the wake of a letter written to Rahul Gandhi by Yaseen Malik’s wife asking the Congress leader’s help in starting a debate in the Parliament, claiming her husband can be instrumental in bringing peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
The NIA filed charges in the 2017 terror funding case against several individuals, including Malik, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 by a trial court after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Smriti Irani attacks INDIA bloc over Article 370 resolution
Irani also said she is outraged as an Indian as she tore into the Congress and the INDIA bloc in Jammu and Kashmir after the Union territory’s assembly passed a resolution demanding restoration of Article 370.
Addressing a press conference in Delhi, She called the resolution an attempt by the Congress-led INDIA bloc to bring in a resolution that is against the Constitution of India and the opinion of the Supreme Court.
“The resolution brought by the INDI alliance led by Congress brings to the fore many questions. Does it stand against the rights of Dalits, tribals, children and women?… Congress leadership, particularly the Gandhi family, needs to answer – do they stand for terrorism and stand against the development of J&K? Do they stand against the Constitution of India,” she said.

The BJP is strongly opposing the Omar Abdullah government after the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday urging the Centre to engage in dialogue with elected representatives to restore the former state’s special status.
Although the Congress contested the elections in alliance with the National Conference, it is not part of the Jammu and Kashmir government. BJP members continued their protests in the J&K Assembly on Thursday against the resolution, leading to the removal of three party MLAs by order of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.
