Ludhiana: The municipal corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Phagwara in Punjab voted on Saturday to elect their councillors amid incidents of violence and allegations of booth capturing by opposing parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akal Dal (SAD), BJP and the Congress.
Over 3,300 candidates were in the fray in these elections, with 3,809 polling booths set up to facilitate voting for 37.32 lakh eligible voters, including 17.75 lakh women. The polling process is being conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Undeterred by the morning chill, voters arrived early, forming queues at polling stations to cast their ballots. Key political leaders who cast their votes include BJP’s Tarun Chugh, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Ludhiana MLA Ashok Prashar, and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh.
With the voting process concluded, results have started coming in from wards across these municipalities.
