Chandigarh: Days after Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha on December 30, farmers in Punjab have called for a Kisan Mahapanchayat at the Khanauri protest site on January 4. The farmers decision to hold Mahapanchayat has come at a time when the Supreme Court has come down on the Punjab Government for not shifting farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to a hospital, despite fasting for more than a month.
According to reports, SKM leader Kaka Singh Kotra said Dallewal has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the 33rd day on Saturday. “On January 4 at Khanauri, we will hold a big Kisan Mahapanchayat in which farmers from various states will participate,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
What Supreme Court said on Dallewal
Earlier on Saturday, the top expressed that other farmer leaders might not have allowed the state government to take Dallewal to hospital. While responding to SC , Dallewal said in a video message, “I am sitting on a fast. Who gave this report in the Supreme Court and who spread this misconception that I have been kept hostage, where did such a thing come from? “Seven lakh farmers of this country have committed suicide due to debt. To save farmers is necessary, therefore, I am sitting here, I am not under anyone’s pressure.”
Punjab Govt urges Dalleal to accept medical treatment
Dallewal also said that he wrote a letter to the Supreme Court, urging it to ask the Centre to accept the farmers’ demands. The farmer leader had earlier said that he would not break his fast until the government agreed to the demands of farmers. In the meantime, officials of Punjab government again urged Dallewal to accept medical treatment even if he wishes to continue his fast.
