New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has come to light from Punjab’s Barnala, a two-year-old girl died after she was crushed by a vehicle which belonged to the management of a private school.
The incident was captured on CCTV. It occurred at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, when the girl Zoya was playing on the school premises. In the footage, the child can be seen running in front of the car just as it starts moving. The devastated family of the girl said it was the driver’s negligence that caused the death of their child. Police said the driver of the car has been arrested and a probe into the incident is being carried out.
Talking to reporters, Zoya’s father Suraj Kumar said he and his wife, Anupama, were paying a visit to the church with their daughter. He said that his daughter was playing but was run over due to the driver’s negligence. “She died on the spot. She was my only child.”
He added that the area was small and the driver was driving at a high speed. “How could he do that inside such a small space? He should have been careful. When he first ran over her, he should have stopped the car. The car did not stop and the rear wheels also went over her,” Kumar added.
‘Who will I play with now?’
Kumar also levelled allegations against the occupants of the vehicle, who were believed to be employees of the school. He said the occupants of the car neither apologised for the incident nor assisted in rushing their daughter to the hospital.
Kumar cried inconsolably, and asked: “Couldn’t the driver see my child? The car ran over her completely. I demand justice. I cannot consider this incident as merely an accident. The driver and the school staff didn’t even come to me to apologise. Who hired him as a driver? Who will I feed now? Who will I play with now? Why has no action been taken so far?”
The accused car driver, Jaswinder Singh, has been arrested, Deputy Superintendent of Police Satbir Singh said. “He is a resident of Sirsa in Haryana. The vehicle has also been seized. A probe has been launched,” the officer added.
