Pune: A controversy has erupted in Maharashtra’s Pune after a pub was found distributing condoms and ORS to guests visiting the place for the New Year celebrations. The police have started recording statements after the matter came to light.
Following the development, Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress registered a complaint with Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar against the pub ‘High Spirit’, urging him to take strict action over the incident after the invites went viral. The party said that while it is not against pubs or nightlife, the marketing strategy used to attract the youth is against Pune culture.
Maharashtra Youth Congress writes letter to Police Commissioner
The letter reads, “This act is indecent to the educational and cultural traditions of Pune city.”It added, “It is feared that such acts will send a wrong message to the youth, which will create misunderstandings and wrong habits in the society.”
“We are not against pubs and nightlife. However, the marketing strategy used in this case to attract youngsters is against the traditions of Pune. We demand that tough action be taken by the police against the pub management,” Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress leader Akshay Jain said.
‘Step taken to create awareness’
According to the pub officials, the step was taken to create awareness among the public. The police also recorded the statements of the guests who had come to the party when they started investigating the case. The pub also claimed that ‘distributing condoms is not a crime’.
In the meantime, speaking to the media on Monday, the Police Commissioner said, “For the New Year celebrations, around 3,000 police personnel have already been deployed for public safety and smooth celebrations. The traffic police staff will remain active at several places identified as risk zones. Actions will be taken against traffic violators.”
