Pune: Pune’s metro network is growing rapidly. It has improved public transport in the city and provided a faster, more comfortable travel option for commuters. The Pimpri-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi Metro corridors, already operational, have become popular and serve over 1.25 lakh passengers daily. These air-conditioned trains offer a smoother and quicker alternative to road travel and reduce the city’s dependency on traditional modes of transport.
Chandrakant Patil, Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister, recently discussed the importance of new routes in boosting Pune’s connectivity. The ongoing expansion is expected to ease congestion on some of the city’s busiest roads, including Sinhgad Road, Karve Road and Solapur Road. It will improve the daily commute for residents.
Maharashtra Metro progress
The Maharashtra Metro (MahaMetro) project has already made strides in reducing traffic woes. The state government has approved new corridors such as Swargate-Khadakwasla and Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi, which promise to enhance intra-city travel. Currently, Pune boasts 32 kilometres of operational metro routes, including a 5-kilometre underground stretch from Shivajinagar to Swargate.
Other than that, a 6-kilometre underground line from Swargate to Katraj has received central government approval and was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Maharashtra government has submitted proposals to the central government to extend two major metro corridors: Swargate to Hadapsar-Kharadi and Swargate to Khadakwasla. These extensions aim to enhance Pune’s connectivity and support the city’s growing transportation needs.
Ongoing and proposed developments
Construction is progressing on several key metro routes:
- Pimpri-Nigdi Route: Expanding the metro’s reach to northern Pune.
- Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Route: Connecting the IT hub of Hinjewadi with the city centre.
Proposed routes under consideration include:
- Vanaz to Chandni Chowk
- Nal Stop to Warje
- Hinjewadi to Chandni Chowk
The Hinjewadi to Chandni Chowk corridor, in particular, is under close review for approval.
Importance of expansion
The metro project is important for addressing Pune’s urban challenges. By reducing traffic congestion on major roads like Sinhgad Road, Karve Roa and Solapur Road, it promises smoother travel across the city. Expanded routes will improve accessibility, connecting IT hubs and residential areas, while providing an eco-friendly alternative to road transport. Apart from this, the metro will save commuters time, boost overall efficiency and make daily travel more easier.
