The attack comes close on the heels of spotting of a leopard on the Rajarambapu Institute of Technology campus on Pune outskirts. Back then, a search operation by forest and fire brigade officials was carried out in the area. Wildlife experts were also pressed into service.
In June, Junnar was declared as “potential leopard disaster-prone areas”, along with four Pune tehsils. Around 233 villages come under these four tehsils. Ambegaon, Khed and Shirur are the areas which are most prone to leopard attacks.
The state forest department is seeking the nod of the additional director general of wildlife in the Union forests ministry to carry out sterilisation of 47 leopards.
