Kolkata: Kolkata is witnessing widespread anger and protests as citizens take to the streets seeking justice for the rape and murder of a young doctor that occurred almost a month ago. The demonstrations are gaining international attention, with the Indian community in 13 countries worldwide standing in solidarity.
In the city’s upscale southern neighbourhoods, two major marches are taking place: one organised by 58 school alumni associations and another led by Tollywood film actors. Artists has also joined the movement who have created impactful road graffiti at key intersections to voice their discontent.
Thousands are expected to gather on Sunday at midnight for the third edition of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign, a demonstration aimed at demanding justice for the doctor. Doctors are continuing their protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has become the focal point of the ongoing agitation.
Protests spread across Kolkata
After the mass protests, another ‘Reclaim the Night’ demonstration will be held by women, starting at 11 pm. The event will see participation from people across various fields, including musicians, artists, painters and actors. Protests are not limited to central Kolkata.
Suburban areas like Barrackpore, Barasat, Budge Budge, Belgharia, Agarpara, Dumdum and Baguiati are also set to witness similar demonstrations. The campaign involves gatherings at multiple intersections, crossings and roundabouts throughout the city. In South Kolkata, there will be major gatherings from Gol Park to Garia along SC Mallick Road, while in the northern parts of the city, a march is planned from Sodepur to Shyambazar along BT Road.
Candlelight vigil in Delhi
Apart from Kolkata, doctors and social activists in Delhi held similar demonstrations, including a candlelight march from Savitri to Market 1 in Chittaranjan Park, calling for swift justice for the doctor and stronger action against violence targeting women. The ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign has previously seen similar demonstrations on August 14 and September 4, with participants continuing to rally for justice.
