New Delhi: India on Thursday called on the Bangladesh government to take steps against extremist groups and safeguard the Hindu community in the port city of Chittagong, where violence against the community has recently occurred, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The Indian government’s response came following clashed between Bangladesh security forces and Hindu community after an objectionable Facebook post demanding ban on ISKCON. As a result, joint police and army forces launched an operation in the area on Tuesday night, during which they reportedly targeted the Hindu community.
MEA condemns attacks on Hindus
In response to the attacks on the Hindu community, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have observed that there have been attacks on Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Their properties have been looted, their business establishments have been looted. These happened following incendiary posts on social media targeting Hindu religious organisations.”
“It is understood that there are extremist elements who are behind such posts and such illegal criminal activities. This is bound to create further tensions in the community. We yet again urge the government of Bangladesh to take strong measures to ensure the safety of Hindus and to take action against extremist elements,” he added.
Clashes in Chittagong
As the police arrived to quell the growing tensions, protesters threw bricks and other objects at the police. They were also allegations that acid-like substances were thrown at the authorities. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene. Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen shared a disturbing video of the clashes. The conflict escalated to the point where the army reportedly visited a Hindu-owned shop in Hazari Lane, Chittagong, issuing a threatening ultimatum to the occupants.
