New Delhi: Shaija A, an NIT-Calicut professor accused of eulogising Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse, has been appointed as the Dean of Planning and development at the institute. Her appointment will take effect from March 7.
The decision has triggered a row with CPI-M’s youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), opposing the move. The student youth wing has also announced a protest march against the appointment.
Professor arrested and charged
In February 2024, professor Shaija A was arrested and charged for praising Nathuram Godse for on Mahatma Gandhi’s Martyr’s Day on January 30.
She was later granted bail. The complaints against the professor were filed by DYFI, youth Congress after she wrote a comment praising Godse on social media. Her comment was in response to a right-wing lawyer.
What Shaija’s comment said
In her comment, Shaija allegedly said she was ‘proud’ of Nathuram Godse because he ‘saved’ India by assassinating Mahatma Gandhi, sad a report in Times of India.
She was also questioned by local police after a case was filed against her. She was charged under Section 153 (act of provoking someone to cause a riot).
She was later granted anticipatory bail by Kunnamangalam court.
