New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday (November 11) administered the oath of office to Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a ceremony held at at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Khanna has succeeded Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired as the CJI on November 10, and his terms will end on May 13, 2025.
Centre notified Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s name as next CJI on October 24
The Centre had notified Justice Khanna’s name as the next CJI on October 24 following Justice Chandrachud’s recommendation on October 16.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” Law minister Meghwal wrote on social media platform X.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated as Supreme Court judge in January 2019
Justice Khanna, who was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on January 18, 2019, has been part of several landmark judgments at the top court, including upholding the sanctity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), scrapping the Electoral Bonds Scheme, upholding the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the grant of interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi Excise Policy case.
Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi (BCI) in 1983. He initially practiced in the district courts in Delhi. Later, he started practice in the Delhi High Court and tribunals in various fields of law, such as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated as a judge at Delhi High Court in 2005
Justice Khanna was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005. He was made a permanent judge of the high court in 2006. During his tenure at the High Court, he held the position of chairman/Judge-in-charge, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and the District Court Mediation Centres.
