New Delhi: Manchester City have moved to the top of the table, albeit provisionally, after their last gasp win over Wolves at the Molineux. The visitors were frustrated throughout the night, with the Wolves backline proving to be very defiant, especially in the second half. After Jorgen Strand and Josko Gvardiol had kept the score at 1-1, John Stones proved to be the hero for the visitors. Their late win against Wolves helped them set a new club record.
The Cityzens have now gone 31 games unbeaten in the league, setting a new club record for Pep Guardiola’s side. The Catalan broke the previous record that he set himself in his initial years at the club. Between April 2017 and January 2018, Pep’s Manchester City side went on a 30 game unbeaten run before it was ended in a thrilling 4-3 loss to Liverpool. Tonight’s result sees Manchester City better that record.

The Cityzens last tasted defeat in the league almost a year ago, when they lost 1-0 to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in December 2023. This result also means that the Manchester-based club have also extended their unbeaten run at home to 34 games in total. The Skyblues have made the Etihad a fortress for themselves and haven’t lost a game at their home ground since their 2-1 loss to Brentford in November 2022.
Still far away from the Premier League record
While Pep’s side created a club record with their 31st unbeaten game, it is still a considerable number of games away from the all-time Premier League record. The league record was set by Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal when they went 49 games without losing a game, a record that stretched over three seasons including the historic ‘Invincibles’ season of 2003/04, the last time Arsenal won the league.
With 31 games unbeaten, Manchester City are now fourth on the Premier League list of most games unbeaten in a row by a team and 10 more games without a loss will see them move above Chelsea in third place on the list. While the Premier League record is 18 games away for the defending champions, they are well off the record for most number of home games unbeaten, currently with Chelsea at 86 games between 2004 and 2008.
Pep Guardiola has now cemented himself in Premier League history with this record. The Catalan manager has now overseen the fourth longest and the joint-fifth longest unbeaten runs in league history now. He is one of only four managers to feature in the top 10 twice, alongside legendary Premier League managers like Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger.
