New Delhi: Arsenal’s hopes for a first Premier League title in two decades took a hit on Saturday as they suffered a second consecutive league defeat, falling 1-0 to Newcastle at St James’ Park. Mikel Arteta’s side, already coming off a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth, looked flat once again and struggled to contain a defensively resolute and physically powerful Newcastle team. With this loss, Arsenal could end the weekend as many as eight points behind Manchester City, whose form leaves little room for error at the top.
Newcastle who looked sharp from the outset, their energy and physicality setting the tone early. The Gunners failed to find a response as Alexander Isak found the net in the 12th minute, guiding Anthony Gordon’s expertly delivered cross past Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya. Arsenal’s response was minimal, with few clear chances to test Nick Pope as they struggled to establish any real foothold in Newcastle’s half.
The visitors did have fleeting moments, however. Mikel Merino saw his shot blocked by Lewis Hall on the line, and Declan Rice nearly clawed them back with a deflected effort that rolled just wide of Pope’s post. But Newcastle’s defense was well-drilled, denying Arsenal space and forcing their playmakers out wide, where they could seldom break through. Despite probing late on, the Gunners were left frustrated by Hall, who had a brilliant game against the Gunners.

Raya was busy at the other end, keeping Newcastle from extending their lead with saves against Joe Willock and Isak, but Arsenal’s attacking momentum fizzled each time they threatened. Late in the game, substitute Ethan Nwaneri, who had shown promise in Arsenal’s midweek match against Preston, was brought on to add urgency, yet even his energy couldn’t break through Newcastle’s defensive wall.
Stand-in captain Bukayo Saka nearly carved out a last-minute chance for the visitors, curling in a cross that found Declan Rice at the back post, but the midfielder’s header glanced wide of goal. Newcastle, meanwhile, looked revitalized after five league games without a win, moving up to eighth and only three points behind Arsenal.
For Arteta and Arsenal, there is plenty to ponder as they look to regroup. The absence of Martin Odegaard’s creativity in midfield is becoming more evident, and performances like these won’t be enough if Arsenal are to keep pace with Manchester City in the title race.
