Jammu: Kashmir Police issued an important safety advisory for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts after two trekkers were caught in a crossfire between terrorists and security forces near Srinagar’s Zabarwan area on Sunday. The trekkers, who were exploring the region, managed to alert the police and were safely evacuated from the area after they dialled the emergency number 100.
The incident took place when security forces launched an operation in the Zabarwan forest area based on intelligence suggesting the presence of terrorists. During the operation, the trekkers found themselves in the midst of an exchange of fire between the terrorists and the security forces. Fearing for their lives, the trekkers hid behind rocks to shield themselves.
Trekkers dial 100
One of the trekkers, realising the severity of the situation, quickly dialed 100 and informed the police about their location. The swift response from the Police Control Room (PCR) played a crucial role in coordinating the rescue mission.
Police officers were immediately alerted, and a rescue team was dispatched to evacuate the trekkers safely. The operation was briefly suspended to allow for their evacuation. Fortunately, no one was harmed during the ordeal.
Kashmir Police chief, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, emphasised the importance of trekkers informing the nearest police station in advance about their travel plans and expected routes. This practice, especially in areas where security operations are underway, can help authorities act quickly to ensure the safety of the trekkers in case of unforeseen incidents. He said, “This protocol ensures we can act swiftly to ensure their safety if unexpected incidents occur.”
Zabarwan area, known for its scenic beauty, is a popular trekking destination, particularly during the autumn season. Tourists from all over the world flock to Kashmir for trekking and skiing. However, officials have noted that some trekkers venture into remote areas without informing authorities, which sometimes leads to safety concerns, especially when security operations are taking place in the region.
Police issues alert
According to the police, the trekkers in this particular incident were lucky that one of them had the presence of mind to call for help. “Fortunately, one among them had an idea and he dialed 100,” a senior police officer said. “The PCR’s swift coordination in relaying information to the officers on duty was instrumental in preventing a possible tragedy,” said the police.
Authorities have also urged locals and tourists to make use of the helpline services, including dialling 100 or directly reaching out to nearby police stations, if they find themselves in a situation requiring immediate assistance.
