New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France is evidence of the enduring and robust ties between India and France, which have greatly contributed to strengthening India’s defense capabilities, advancements in space exploration, nuclear energy ambitions and Indo-Pacific strategy. As India seeks to expand its global footprint, France continues to be a reliable partner, supporting its growth in critical sectors that reinforce strategic autonomy and international standing.
France has become an important defence partner for India, providing advanced military technology and building a strong, long-term partnership. Key projects like the Rafale fighter jet deal, the Scorpene submarine programme and talks on developing next-generation fighter jet engines show the growing military ties between the two countries.
Discussions are underway for the purchase of 26 Rafale-M jets for the Indian Navy’s aircraft carriers, along with three extra Scorpene-class conventional submarines. Joint military exercises, including VARUNA (navy), GARUDA (air force) and SHAKTI (army), have improved teamwork and preparedness for future security challenges.
In addition to traditional defence, India and France have taken a major step in space security by signing a Letter of Intent on Defence Space Cooperation. The agreement will help both countries work together on space-based security and surveillance, strengthening India’s capabilities in modern warfare.
India-France strategic partnership
PM Modi’s visit to France is more than just a diplomatic trip. It is a step toward making India stronger in defence, technology and the economy. India and France share common goals and believe in working together while maintaining their independence. This makes their partnership important for global decision-making and mutual security. As the world goes through major changes, the alliance helps India have a bigger say in global matters, strengthens its defense, and supports its role in security and economic leadership.
