On the second day of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that BRICS countries have to fight together against terrorism. There should not be a double standard on this. This statement is clearly in line with India’s policy of zero tolerance for terror. He also gave a message to the world facing a war to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy while adding that India does not support war. PM Modi also congratulated President Vladimir Putin for organizing the summit and also welcomed the members associated with BRICS.
PM Modi also advocated for concrete global efforts to combat terrorism and stressed the need for united and firm support of all to combat terrorism and terrorist financing. He also said that we need to take proactive steps to prevent the radicalization of youth in our countries and work together on the long-pending matter of a comprehensive convention on international terrorism in the United Nations. PM Modi said, similarly, we need to work on global rules for cyber security and safe AI.
What PM Modi said at BRICS
While addressing the 16th BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, PM Modi also said that it is necessary to reform the UNSC and focus the world’s attention on many challenges like world war, conflict, climate change, terrorism, inflation prevention, food security, energy security, health security, and water security.
The PM said, in its new form, the BRICS represents 40 per cent of the world’s humanity and 30 per cent of the economy, and in the coming times, it will emerge as a more effective medium to face global challenges. BRICS is a big economy of more than 30 trillion dollars, and the BRICS Business Council and the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance have played a special role in increasing our economic cooperation.
Referring to the success of UPI, PM Modi said, “The Unified Payment Interface (UPI) created by India is a big success story of India. It has been adopted in many countries.” He highlighted the fact that UPI was launched in the UAE, and this cooperation can also be done with other foreign countries. He further said, ‘Special emphasis is being laid on the construction of infrastructure in all BRICS countries. We have created the ‘Gatishakti’ portal to rapidly increase multimodal connectivity in India. This has helped in the integrated planning and implementation of these developments and reduced logistics costs.
How India is benefiting from various world forums
Given the current geopolitical uncertainties, be it the Russia-Ukraine conflict or the war in West Asia, India can leverage the various global platforms like the ASEAN, G-20, BRICS, QUAD, SCO, etc. to establish itself as a global leader. India has the potential to use these platforms to further strengthen its leadership in rebuilding a global order that is multipolar, inclusive, and respects the rule of law and uses the opportunity to establish itself as a global leader.
PM Modi is very well aware of the fact that India cannot be forced to choose any one side in the wars, as in matters of Asia, New Delhi is an important player, which has its own autonomous policy. Thus, in the matter of world order, we can expect the creation of such an interesting situation, where the dominance of the Western countries is decreasing and we are entering the phase of a multipolar world. The countries that used to be the major powers earlier are now facing setbacks.
Thus, it won’t be wrong to say that under PM Modi, India has successfully balanced its ties with Russia, strengthened partnerships with the US, and strategically aligned with key players like Iran. And above all, New Delhi has been deftly using various global platforms to boost its standing in changing geopolitical dynamics.
