New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (April 30) at 11 am. This will be the first cabinet meeting since the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 people, including 25 Indians and one Nepali tourist.
Before the cabinet meeting, PM Modi will also hold discussions with three important committees — the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). These meetings will include several Union Ministers and will focus on security, political and economic matters.
Steps taken by Indian govt so far
After the Pahalgam attack, PM Modi had chaired a CCS meeting on April 23. In that meeting, the government decided to take several strong steps against Pakistan. These included stopping the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Wagah-Attari border, and reducing Pakistan’s diplomatic presence in India. India believes that the attack was planned from across the border.
However, Pakistan has denied any role in the attack. It had responded by closing its airspace for Indian flights and suspending the Simla Agreement, which guides relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, tensions have increased. On the night of April 28-29, the Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire and opened fire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, including areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, and Akhnoor.
Pakistan’s claims
Pakistan also claimed that India may take military action within the next 24 to 36 hours. Reports say PM Modi has given full freedom to the Indian Army to respond to the attack as they see fit.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had first claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack, but later denied involvement.
The United Nations has called for both countries to remain calm, but the situation continues to remain tense. Indian security forces are still searching for those behind the attack.
