Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited as the guest of honour for Mauritius’ National Day celebrations next month, Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced, highlighting the strong bilateral relations between the two nations.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Friday, Ramgoolam described Modi’s visit as a “singular privilege” for Mauritius, especially considering the Indian leader’s demanding schedule. Mauritius observes its National Day annually on March 12, commemorating its independence from British rule, which was officially attained in 1968.
“In the context of the celebrations of the 57th anniversary of the Independence of our country, I have great pleasure in informing the House, that following my invitation, His Excellency, Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the guest of honour for our National Day celebrations,” Ramgoolam said.
He also cited Modi’s recent trips to Paris and the United States to emphasize the Indian leader’s packed schedule. “The visit of Shri Modi is a testimony of the close relations between our two nations,” Ramgoolam said. Last year, President Droupadi Murmu participated in Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as the chief guest.
