New Delhi: Padma Bhushan recipient Sharda Sinha breathed her last in New Delhi on Tuesday (October 5, 2024). The renowned folk singer was 72 years old at the time of her tragic demise. She lost her life after battling cancer at a hospital in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over her death on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The 74-year-old leader described Sharda’s passing as an irreparable loss to the music world and added that her songs for Chhath will resonate forever. He also extended his condolences to Sharda’s family and admirers.

For the unversed, the Bihar Kokila was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Delhi for multiple myeloma. She passed away on the first day of Chhath, a festival of great significance. An AIIMS official was quoted as saying by PTI that Sharda died at 9:20 PM due to refractory shock caused by septicemia. She had been dealing with multiple myeloma since 2017.
Sharda was on ventilator support after suffering a health setback. She was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH), the cancer division of AIIMS, in October 2024.
It is to be noted that Sharda, a devoted Chhath follower, released a new song annually in honor of the festival. She was also known as the Begum Akhtar of Mithila for her soulful renditions of Chhath and folk songs.
In a tragic turn of events, Sharda had lost her husband a few weeks back. She is survived by her son Anshuman and her daughter Vandana.
