New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Indian chess grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi on Sunday for his “phenomenal feat” as he breached the 2800 mark in live chess ratings. The PM added that apart from being a great personal milestone, his achievement will also inspire many more youngsters to play chess and make a name for themselves on the global stage.
By crossing the 2800 mark, Erigaisi became only the second Indian player to do so, after five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand. The club of 2800 in the live ratings is a rarefied one which only a handful of players have walked into. Notably, only 14 years have crossed 2800 Elo in published ratings in history.
PM Modi took to his social media handle on “X” (formerly Twitter) and shared a congratulatory post for Erigaisi, hailing his milestone and how it will invoke enthusiasm in the budding chess players of the nation.
“Congratulations to Arjun Erigaisi for crossing the 2800 mark in live chess ratings! This is a phenomenal feat. His exceptional talent and perseverance make our entire nation proud,” PM Modi wrote.
“In addition to being a great personal milestone, it will also inspire many more youngsters to play chess and shine on the global stage. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours,” he added.
