Passenger found smoking mid-air on Pune-bound IndiGo flight, case filed

Pune: The police have filed a case against a passenger who was found smoking mid-air on an IndiGo flight, which was on its way from Delhi to Pune. The 38-year-old was caught smoking in the flight’s lavatory before the flight landed in Pune at 1 AM on Monday.

The case was filed at Vimantal police station in the city by a security executive of the airlines, who was posted at the Pune International Airport. As per officials, the case has been filed under section 25 of The Aircraft Rules, 1937 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Flight attendants saw smoke inside the lavatory

Sharing details, the officials said that the flight attendants saw the smoke inside the lavatory, after which they recovered parts of the smoked cigarette from the dustbin, ‘The Indian Express’ reported. After this, they seized a lighter from the passenger. The ground crew of the airline was informed after the flight reached the airport, after which the passenger was handed over to the police.

Previous incident

Earlier in July, the Mumbai Police had filed a case against a passenger who was also found smoking an e-cigarette in an IndiGo flight mid-air. The incident reportedly took place when the flight was on its way from Coimbatore to Mumbai around 9 pm on July 8, officials had said. During this incident too, the crew members of the flight had noticed smoke coming out from one of the seats. After noticing, they enquired about a passenger, who admitted to smoking an e-cigarette

After this, the passenger was detained by the police and a case was filed under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Aircraft Rules was registered against him.
