DJB’s announcement
The DJB added that the raw water source of 110MGD Bhagirathi WTP and 140 MGD Sonia Vihar WTP is Upper Ganga Canal Muradnagar, UP. Due to scheduled annual maintenance across Upper Ganga Canal by UP Irrigation department w.e.f 12th October 2024 to 31st October 2024, the UGC was closed from Haridwar on 12th NotificationsOctober 2024 Midnight. During this closure period, UP Irrigation department and UP Jal Nigam carried out repair and maintenance of Barrages, Regulators, 24in following Desilting of various online storages, setting tanks at Muradnagar and conduits repair work. The Ganga water is being received from UGC at both WTPs due to ponding at various online storages across canal which has now been closed completely w.e.f. 21st October 2024. Subsequently, Ganga water supply to these WTPs has been stopped.”
It added, “The Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar WTPs now depends on River Yamuna for alternate source of Raw water till 31st October 2024 Midnight. But, due to high ammonia content i.e. above 1.5 ppm in raw water at River Yamuna, it is difficult to treat the Yamuna raw water. Hence, the production at Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar has been curtailed up to 30% of the capacity. Further, the production would depend entirely upon the quality of Raw water at River Yamuna and production from these plants shall vary accordingly.”
