Lahore: Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in India. Symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, it brings people together in joy and celebration. Homes and streets are adorned with diyas (oil lamps), candles, and vibrant rangoli designs, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Families come together to perform rituals, exchange sweets and set off fireworks to mark the occassion.
Sonya Hussaiyn celebrates Diwali
While it is primarily a Hindu festival, several people across the world often participate happily in Diwali celebrations and cheer. This year, Pakistani actress Sonya Hussaiyn also joined in to celebrate Diwali and posted a video online after the celebrations. However, Sonya’s video was not received well.
Sonya Hussaiyn shared a post from her Diwali celebrations, tagging her friends who joined her in the festivities. “Pakistan is a beautiful mosaic of cultures and beliefs, and we must celebrate our minorities as vital parts of this nation,” Hussaiyn captioned her Diwali video. However, she was met with a lot of criticism as people on the internet threatened to unfollow her and some even went to the extent of saying that no Hindu celebrity celebrates Muslim festivals and hence question the actress’ decision to celebrate Diwali.

Sonya Hussaiyn trolled for celebrating Diwali
“Why have I been following these actors??? why???” one social media user commented on Sonya’s video. “Minorities can celebrate their celebration in Pakistan but why you all celebrating ajeeb,” another comment read. “Unfollowed…can’t stand this nonsense,” yet another social media user said.
Well, Sonya’s video might not have landed well with viewers but celebrating festivals should come naturally to all irrespective of religious boundaries, don’t you think?
