New Delhi: Following India’s 3-0 whitewash in their recently concluded Test series against New Zealand at home, Wasim Akram has claimed Pakistan too can win a Test series against India on turning pitches. India lost the 3rd Test in Mumbai by 25 runs on Sunday to suffer their third consecutive defeat against the Kiwis and suffer their first-ever whitewash in a three-match Test series at home.
India’s struggles against spin were left exposed in the series as the likes of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan all struggled against the Kiwi spinners. Ajaz Patel picked up a six-wicket haul to stop India from chasing down a low-key target of 147 runs in their second innings in the 3rd Test in Mumbai and help New Zealand pull off a historic series victory.
Akram shared his views on a potential Test series between arch-rivals India and Pakistan while doing commentary during the ongoing 1st ODI between Australia and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Monday. Akram said it will be massive for the game if a Test series can be organised between India and Pakistan. The pace legend insisted Pakistan can get the better of India on spinning tracks.
“It will be massive. It will be good for the game, for two cricket-crazy nations,” Akram said on air. “Pakistan can now beat India on turners,” Michael Vaughan told Akram. The Pakistan legend agreed as he responded: “Pakistan have a chance to beat India in Tests now on a spinning track. They have been hammered by New Zealand 3-0 at home.”
When did India and Pakistan last took part in a Test series?
A bilateral Test series between India and Pakistan has been one of the most anticipated events in world cricket for a while now. The arch-rivals last locked horns in a three-match test series in 2007 where India won 1-0. The two teams have not played bilateral cricket against each other since then due to strained political relations between the two nations.
India and Pakistan continue to meet only in major ICC events and last played in a bilateral series in 2012-13.
