New Delhi: As the world reels from the shocking terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 28 innocent civilians on Tuesday, global leaders have expressed their solidarity with India. However, Canada has been the only major leader that has yet to issue an official statement. The brutal assault saw gunmen open fire on unarmed tourists at the scenic Baisaran meadows, popularly known as ‘Mini Switzerland.’
Victims were reportedly engaged in pony rides, picnics, and shopping when terrorists struck without warning. Indian authorities have released sketches of three suspects namely, Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha, all identified as Pakistani nationals, deepening suspicions of cross-border terrorism. Notably, while India’s geopolitical adversaries like China, Turkey, and even the Taliban and Iran condemned the carnage, the Canadian government has remained silent.
The lack of a statement from Ottawa comes amid strained diplomatic relations with New Delhi. However, Canada’s opposition leader Pierre Poilievre broke the silence, saying “I condemn in the strongest terms the horrific terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that took the lives of innocent civilians, including tourists and families. Canada stands united against terror in all its forms.”
In contrast, U.S. President Donald Truro issued a powerful message of support via Truth Social, “We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all.” As India mourns, the absence of a response from Canada’s government has raised eyebrows globally, with many questioning its commitment to standing against terrorism in all its forms.
