New Delhi: Two persons have been arrested after three women, all in their early 20s, drowned in the swimming pool of a beach resort in Karnataka’s Mangaluru. The arrested include Manohar, the resort owner, and Bharath, the resort manager.
An FIR was registered under Section 106 of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita after the horrifying incident. Further investigation into the incident is underway, said Mangalore Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal. The drowning incident of the trio, holidaying in the resort, was captured on CCTV.
They had checked into the resort on November 16
The deceased were identified as Nishita MD (21), Parvathi S (20), and Keerthana N (21). They were all final year engineering students from Mysuru. The three were vacationing at ‘Vazco’ beach resort in Ullal, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. None of them reportedly knew swimming and ventured into the pool. They had checked into the resort on November 16 and were found dead in the swimming pool the following morning, Mangaluru Police Commissioner.
In the video, the three can be seen standing near the shallow edge of the pool when one of them decides to go further toward the deep end. All of a sudden, she starts struggling to stay afloat, and while another friend tries to help her, but in vain. The third friend also tries to save both of them, and as she does so, she also enters the deep end of the pool but soon, all of them try to stay afloat. The third woman tries to reach two pool floats drifting near the opposite edge of the pool but fails. After flapping their arms and legs for some minutes, their bodies stop movement.
The resort staff discovered their bodies and informed the police. There was no lifeguard near the pool when the incident happened, and the pool’s depth was not mentioned anywhere, police said, as per PTI. Mangaluru Police Commissioner said that all three died due to “accidental drowning”.
