New Delhi: India on Tuesday expressed its condolences over the loss of life and property in the devastating earthquake in Tibet earlier today. While over 100 people lost their lives, more than 130 people were injured.
In its message, India did not mention any reference to China, which has stepped up efforts for rescue operations in Tibet. In a message Chinese President Xi Jinping also said that officials must ensure proper treatment of those who are injured in the incident.

“Government and people of India express condolences on the tragic loss of life and property caused by the devastating earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X.
Over 1,000 homes destroyed in tragedy
Earlier in the day, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said that 95 people were confirmed , while 130 others injured after the earthquake jolted Dingri area in Tibet Autonomous Region. Over 1,000 houses were also destroyed in the tragedy, which had its epicentre in Tsogo township. Apart from Tibet, tremors were also felt in parts several parts of India. However there were no reports of any lose of property or life in the country.
After tensions in last few years, India and China reached an understanding late last year, after which standoff ended in the in Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). However, last week, India expressed its concerns over China’s plan to build a mega dam near the the Brahmaputra river in Tibet and in an illegally occupied region of Ladakh. New Delhi also called for transparency and consultations in the matter.
