Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi visits family of dalit youth killed in Raebareli, demands justice

Raebareli: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited his constituency Raebareli. He was here to meet the family of a youth who was killed by some miscreants, for demanding his wages. The Congress leader alleged that the police was deliberately not taking action against the accused.

I am here to demand justice

Talking about the purpose of his visit, Gandhi said that he was here to demand justice for the deceased and his family members. Talking to the media, he said, “People who have gathered here want justice because a Dalit youth has been killed and his family has been blackmailed but no action is being taken against this.”

He alleged that the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Raebareli was not taking any action in the case. This he said has angered the locals. Explaining the purpose of his visit, he said that he wants people from all sections of the society in Uttar Pradesh to get respect and justice and that is why, he is here to express solidarity with the people and demand justice for them. He further said that he will not step back until justice is served to the family.

Gandhi also met the deceased’s mother. He said that he got to know that the youth who was killed was a barber by profession. His mother alleged that at least 6 to 7 people would come to his shop and get free haircuts. The last time when these people visited, her son asked them for money. This angered them and they killed him, cried the poor woman.

Sharing the story of the youth, Gandhi said that this was “clear-cut injustice” and that this needs to be rectified. He said that though it is up to the courts to decide what punishment should be given to the culprits in the case, he as the Leader of Opposition can only put pressure (on the government) to take action in the case. He said that he will keep demanding justice until it is served and will not step back.
