New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on One Nation, One Election Bills is set to have eight more members thus taking the total number of MPs in the panel now to 39.
As per reports, the government has decided to accommodate eight more members after some parties complained about not getting representation in the JPC. The government is likely to make announcement of JPC and its members today in the Parliament.
Who new members of JPC on One Nation, One Election JPC?
Parties like Shiv Sena (UBT) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has demanded the inclusion of their MPs in the panel. As per the report, the expanded JPC is set to have eight more members including Anil Desai from Shiv Sena (UBT), Chhote Lal from Samajwadi Party (SP), Baijayant Panda from BJP, Sanjay Jaiswal from LJP (Ramvilas), Shambhavi Choudhary (BJP) and K Radhakrishnan (CPM).
After the inclusion of new members, the JPC is set to have 12 members from BJP, Congress (3), SP (2), and one member each from Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, LJP, Jana Sena, RLD, CPM, DMK, and TDP.
The JPC is set to have 12 members from Rajya Sabha. The panel will submit its report on the first day of the last week of the Budget session of the Parliament.
Bhartruhari Mahtab set to lead the JPC on ONOE
BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab is said to be considered for heading the joint committee of Parliament that will scrutinise the two bills proposing simultaneous elections.
With the BJP set to get the position of the chair for the crucial panel, official sources said Mahtab’s parliamentary experience may weigh in his favour, said PTI report.
He is a seven-time Lok Sabha member from Odisha and is currently heading the standing committee for the finance ministry.
Mahtab is one of the 10 BJP MPs in Lok Sabha, including Anurag Thakur and P P Chaudhary, who figure among the 21 Lok Sabha members proposed to be part of the parliamentary panel on simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls.
