Kolkata: After being convicted for the rape and murder of the trainee doctor in the RG Kar case in Sealdah court, convict Sanjay Roy told the court that he was falsely complicated. The court will pronounce the sentencing of the convict on Monday.
The case is related to a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose body at the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last year. During the probe, injuries were also found in her body revealing that the victim was raped before the murder. The incident had led to nationwide anger, with resident doctors continuing with their protests across the country for several days.
‘Convict to be allowed to speak on Monday’
The court, after pronouncing him guilty in the case told Sanjay Roy that he would be allowed to speak on Monday. Maintaining that he was falsely implicated in the case, Sanjay Roy claimed that one IPS officer was also involved in the case. “I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go. One IPS involved,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Several protest marches were also organised in Kolkata for several days after the incident, with participants demanding actions against the perpetrators of the crime and also voicing their concerns over the law and order in West Bengal.
Judgement pronounced two months after on-camera trial
Saturday’s judgement was pronounced close to two months after the in-camera trial started last November. The convict was found guilty under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which governs rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, which is related to punishments for death and murder. After the verdict, victim’s parents thanked the judge for the verdict and observed that the court honoured their trust in the case.
