Chennai: In a significant move to streamline public transportation, the Tamil Nadu Government is set to launch a single travel card scheme, enabling seamless travel on city buses, electric trains, and metro. The National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) program, expected to be operational within three to five months, will allow commuters to use a single rechargeable card across all three modes of transport.
The initiative aims to simplify transportation for millions of daily commuters in Chennai. According to officials, all city buses in Chennai have been equipped with electronic devices since March, facilitating cashless transactions through credit/debit cards and UPI.

The single travel card will offer features such as rechargeable options, monthly passes, and a special one-day pass for tourists, allowing multiple journeys in a day. Electronic ticketing machines have already been successfully implemented in Chennai, Municipal Transport Corporation, and Government Rapid Transport Corporation, with Villupuram and Kumbakonam Transport Corporations following suit.
The rollout of the single travel card scheme is part of the state government’s efforts to modernize public transportation. With eight transport corporations operating under the Tamil Nadu Government Transport Corporation, the move is expected to enhance convenience and efficiency for commuters.
The Transport Department aims to complete the implementation of electronic ticketing in all buses by January next year. Once operational, the single travel card scheme will integrate services provided by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai Electric Train Service, and Chennai Metro, making travel easier and more convenient for residents and tourists alike.
