New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal has contacted its Indian counterpart, demanding justice for Nepalese students who reportedly faced mistreatment by staffers of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University while calling for action following the death of a third-year BTech student from Nepal.
The Nepalese commission has requested India’s NHRC to secure the safety of Nepalese students and provide an amicable learning environment, and take action against the university officials engaged in the incident.
What did the statement say
Issuing a statement, Nepal NHRC’s joint spokesperson Shyam Babu Kafle said, “The commission has written to the National Human Rights Commission of India requesting an early investigation into the incident of Nepali students studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University. The commission urged to ensure full safety to the students studying there, and hold the office-bearers to account with a fair investigation.”
The NHRC of Nepal pointed out that students, who were reported forced to leave the university on February 17 following the tension that took place after the student’s suicide, are not able to return to the campus, as they fear repercussion.
The statement also read that Nepal’s human rights commission has requested the government of Nepal to make further diplomatic efforts with India to promote a fear-free environment where students can pursue their studies without any concern.
Odisha CM has assured action against culprits
The Odisha government has reiterated that protection of Nepalese students remains their top priority. A senior official reportedly said that the Odisha CM has already spoken to Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and given assurance of strict action against those behind the incident.
He added that a high-level probe is ongoing and KIIT authorities have been warned of action if they threaten or harbour any grudge against any Nepalese student.
