Berhampur: Engineering students of a government college in Odisha’s Berhampur district have been expelled from their hostel over allegations of cooking beef, a prohibited activity, on the premises.
Management of the Parala Maharaja Engineering College issued the expulsion order last Thursday. It said seven students from two hostels have been expelled for their involvement in “restrictive activities”. One of the students was even slapped with a fine of Rs 2,000.
The announcement signed by the dean of students’s welfare did not specify what these “restrictive activities” meant. Meanwhile, tension rose in the area over cooking beef as members of right-wing outfits staged protests and demanded strict against the accused students.
The parents of the students have also been informed of the same. The alleged incident took place on Wednesday after some students at the hostel informed the college principal, alleging some others had cooked beef in their hostel room, thus violating the code of conduct.
The college said an inquiry was conducted in connection with the complaint and action has been taken based on the outcome.

Earlier this month, a viral video emerged from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, showing a school principal allegedly “expelling” a seven-year-old student for bringing non-vegetarian food (biryani) to school. The video also captured the principal making derogatory remarks when the student’s mother questioned the reason for her child’s expulsion.
