Kolkata: Various reactions are emerging nationwide regarding the Waqf issue, particularly in Bengal, where it has sparked a controversy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a significant statement on the matter, asserting that the Waqf law will not be implemented in Bengal.
Banerjee has planned to discuss the new law and roadmap of the protest with Imams, Muslim clerics and thought leaders to discuss the roadmap of the protest and the Act. Following her remarks, the topic has gained prominence in discussions across the country, prompting responses from leaders nationwide.
Mamata Banerjee shared her views on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My humble appeal to people of all religions is to remain calm and exercise restraint. Do not engage in inappropriate behaviour in the name of religion. Every human life is precious; do not incite riots for political reasons. Those who spread violence are harming society.”
She emphasized, “Remember, this law was not created by our government. It is a law made by the Central Government, so any questions about it should be directed to them. We have made our position clear: we do not support this law, and it will not be implemented in our state. So, why incite riots?”
In light of Mamata’s statement, violent protests erupted against the Waqf law in Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts on Friday. Protesters set police vehicles on fire, hurled stones, and blocked roads. At least 10 police officers were injured in the chaos, and rail and road traffic were disrupted. Officials reported that over 110 individuals have been arrested so far.
