New Delhi: After 27 years, BJP is set to form the government in Delhi, winning 48 seats in the assembly elections. Speculations about who would be the party’s Chief Minister candidate gained momentum as BJP leaders deliberated on the decision. Sources indicated that the CM would be chosen from the elected MLAs, ruling out the possibility of appointing an MP for the position.
An important meeting was held on Tuesday at Parliament House, where Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda held discussions. The meeting was part of the brainstorming to finalize the party’s decision.
Meetings with newly elected MLAs
BJP President JP Nadda met several MLAs from Delhi, including Sikha Roy, Satish Upadhyay, Anil Sharma, Arvinder Lovely, Ajay Mahawar, Rekha Gupta and Anil Goyal.
The meetings were courtesy calls following BJP’s victory over Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi assembly elections. Many MLAs said that the discussions with Nadda did not involve the selection of a Chief Minister or plans for the legislature party meeting.
Potential CM candidates
It was reported that the BJP legislature party meeting would likely be held on February 16. During this meeting, the leader of the legislature party, who would eventually become the Chief Minister, was expected to be chosen.
Several names emerged as potential candidates, including Parvesh Verma, Virendra Sachdeva and Vijendra Gupta. There were also speculations about the possibility of a woman being chosen as Delhi’s CM. If this took place, it would mark the fourth time a woman would hold this position in the capital.
BJP’s victory after 27 years
The BJP’s win marked a historic moment, as the party prepared to govern Delhi after nearly three decades. The last time BJP formed a government in the city was in 1998.
Following the election results, senior party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held discussions at BJP headquarters on Saturday to chart the way forward. The final decision on Delhi’s Chief Minister is expected to take place after Prime Minister Modi’s return from his visit to France and the United States.
