New Delhi: Every day, ‘shakhas’ are organised by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the morning and evening. Boys participate in these ‘shakhas’. On Wednesday, on the question of girls participating along with boys in the ‘shakhas’, senior RSS functionary Sunil Ambekar said that no demand has been made at the ground (grassroots) level that boys and girls should participate together in RSS ‘shakhas’ and society has also not raised any such demand. He added that if such a demand is made, the RSS will make the necessary changes in its existing structure.
Ambekar was speaking at a programme organised by the media on Wednesday. Volunteers gather every day in RSS ‘shakhas’ and physical exercises etc are conducted in these daily programmes there.
‘Nation-building, human development are the missions of RSS’
On being asked why women are not holding any top positions in the organisation, RSS leader Ambekar said as a ground-level (grassroots level) structure, the ‘shakhas’ of RSS are only for boys but the Rashtriya Sevika Samiti is a complete women’s organisation.
He said that it has been functioning in the same way as RSS since the 1930s. “The core structure of the RSS is its ‘shakhas’. This entire structure is meant for the process of human development. Human development and nation-building are the missions of the RSS. Therefore, only men are there in the ‘shakhas’, while Rashtriya Sevika Samiti has women (as its members),” he said.
‘Current structure is a matter of convenience’
Ambekar said that when the residents of an area say that girls and boys can play together, then we will do so, but society isn’t demanding anything like it currently. He pointed out that the current structure is a matter of convenience, and that is why such an arrangement exists.
Commenting on the clashes in Manipur, he said that it is a serious matter, and it is a serious concern for everyone in the country. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has also expressed concern over the situation in that state. He underlined that the RSS workers are working on the ground there to bring about peace. Ambekar said that they are trying to find a solution and efforts are on in this direction.
