New Delhi: The new Aadhaar law will be harmonised vis-a-vis the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, keeping user interest at the center, said Minister for Electronics & IT (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday during a conference hosted by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in New Delhi. He added, “We need to see how this can be done. That is a task I would like (UIDAI) to take up as one of the major tasks going forward.”
‘Absolutely modern legal framework’
The minister said, “When Aadhaar law was made, we didn’t have any horizontal law for data protection and privacy. There was no basic law on privacy in the country. Now, we have DPDP Act, 2023. And rules of the Act have almost been made. Extensive consultations have been carried out while making these rules. Those consultations are going to get over now. The rules will be notified soon. Now, we will have absolutely modern legal framework in the country.”

‘We need a modern version of Aadhaar Act’
Vaishnaw pointed out that when Aadhaar Act was enacted, at that time there were many gaps in the legal structure. “Today, those gaps have been filled up. So, we need a modern version of Aadhaar Act. The objective should be to keep the user at the center of our legislation, and develop the new legal structure which can really make a difference in the lives of the millions of people who are today using Aadhaar. We have to make a positive change in their lives.”
The focus of the Modi government is to pay attention to the needs of the poorest of the poor and the middle classes. To bring positive change in the lives of these people. This is the key mantra of our governance, the minister underlined. “We live for improving the lives of the poor and the middle classes. We want to empower the most marginalised sections of the society.”
