New Delhi: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday (September 5) expressed deep concern over the safety of women in West Bengal following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 .
He criticised the current state government, led by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, for what he described as a climate of fear and violence against women.

The Union Minister said, “It is very sad to see an atmosphere of violence and fear against women under the rule of TMC and CM.”
He emphasised the failure of the government to ensure the safety of women, youth and the general public. “Neither women, youth, businessmen nor the general public is safe in West Bengal,” he added.
Scindia also stressed on the societal responsibility to protect and respect women. “In our country, it is the responsibility of every Indian citizen to respect and protect women’s power. It is also written in our scriptures that where women are respected, God resides there,” he said.

The Minister expressed dismay at the increasing violence and lack of protection for women, attributing it to what he termed as deceptive efforts by the state government. “Today it is a matter of great sadness that an atmosphere of terror and fear and violence has been created in West Bengal,” Scindia said.
He further criticised the state government’s response, questioning the efficacy of measures like the Aparajita MLA initiative, which aims to address women’s issues.
He called for immediate action and justice for the Kolkata victim doctor’s family, saying that the current government has failed to protect its citizens. “It is my hope and desire that the best court has taken steps. The family should get justice,” Scindia said.
