New Delhi: The day after the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station, that led to the deaths of 18 individuals and injuring several others, the Congress on Sunday demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It said that the minister should take the morale responsibility for the incident.
Accusing Ashwini Vaishnaw of trying to hide the death counts after the incident last night, the main Opposition party noted that the country cannot be left at the mercy of a Railway Minister who called the tragedy a ‘minor incident’

Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said, “The Railway Minister should take responsibility for this accident and resign from his post immediately or the government should dismiss him. In view of yesterday’s mismanagement and massacre, the Railway Minister has no moral right to remain in his post.”

She added, “The common Indian cannot be left at the mercy of such a Railway Minister who calls the death of people a ‘minor incident’ and hides the death toll instead of expressing sympathy for the victims.”
Earlier on Saturday, at least 18 people were dead and several others were injured after the stampede at the station. As per officials, the stampede took place after some passengers slipped and reportedly fell on others.

Notably, there was a massive surge of passengers waiting for trains to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, which led to a stampede at the platform. According to Himanshu Upadhyay, Northern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), the Patna-bound Magadh Express was standing at platform number 14, while the New Delhi-Jammu Uttar Sampark Kranti Express was also there at platform number 15, at the time of the incidence.
